Foundational Climate Action Planning

Sometimes, we learn how to do this work on the job, but more commonly, it’s expected that we learn this on our own. These workshops fill that gap by leveraging 10+ years of climate action planning and 20 years of sustainability experience to teach participants exactly what they need to know to excel in this work.

The goal of climate action planning is to develop effective climate policy. This process is most successful when it’s rooted in data, balanced and informed by stakeholder and community feedback, and effectively communicated to decision-makers and the public.

Key data analyses typically include greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting, a “business-as-usual” forecasting, and scenario modeling. The insights from these analyses ground-truth policies, facilitates a just comparison, and helps inform the design of even more effective policies.

Stakeholder input is gathered through various formal and informal channels, including meetings, focus groups, task forces, and surveys. By integrating diverse perspectives with data analyses, a complete and more balanced narrative emerges, enabling informed and effective policy development that is more likely to lead to action.

Workshop Overview

Climate Action Planning 101

Who this is good for: Everyone. This is the foundational workshop for all climate action planning. (Workshop size range of 10 - 20 participants).

When: 12 hours spread over two days.

What: We will cover everything -- co-benefits, GHG accounting and forecasting, scenario modeling, common reduction actions, stakeholder facilitation techniques, communications, and storytelling. Participants will be able to practice all skills during the workshop.

Where: In-person (preferred) but virtual is also possible. â€‹

Greenhouse Gas Accounting

Who this is good for: Those who want to further their quantitive skillset. GHG accounting forms the base for all subsequent data analyses. (Workshop size range of 10 - 20 participants).

When: 4 hours in one day.

What: We will provide a solid introduction to GHG accounting, including a deep dive into emission source, sector, protocols, emission factors, responsibility for control, and accounting style. Participants will be able to practice all skills during the workshop and be able to compile a visual summary and know the basic formula for calculating GHG emissions from any source. â€‹

Where: In-person or virtual.

GHG Forecasting and Scenario Modeling

Who this is good for: Those who know GHG accounting and want to further their quantitative skills. This analysis is integral to strategy development. (Workshop size range of 10 - 20 participants).

When: 8 hours spread over one day.

What: We will review GHG accounting but will spend the majority of time learning which factors affect future emissions, how to model a "business as usual" scenario, and how to model the most common strategies in the sectors of buildings, energy, transportation, and waste and extrapolate that methodology to any source. We will also look at the link between modeling and co-benefits. Participants will be able to practice all skills during the workshop and be able to compile a visual summary, including a wedge chart.

Where: In-person (preferred) but virtual is also possible. â€‹

Stakeholder Facilitation Techniques

Who this is good for: Those who want to flex their engagement muscle. Facilitation is critical to successful adoption of any plan. (Workshop size range of 10 - 20 participants).

When: 4 hours spread over one day.

What: We will review the spectrum of engagement including benefits and common approaches. Participants will learn and apply engaging and effective methods for collecting feedback from a variety of different stakeholders.

Where: In-person (preferred) but virtual is also possible. (Because in reality, you will have do a lot of your engagement via Zoom and other virtual channels!)
